Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the influence of social media platforms on senior secondary school students interest in Mathematics in Dekina LGA Kogi State. The study was guided by 4 research objectives and questions. The descriptive design was adopted and the convenient sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of senior secondary school students in Dekina LGA Kogi State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently validated 381 respondents. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. The result of the findings reveals that there is significant difference in the academic performance in Mathematics of senior secondary school student’ addicted to social media usage and those who are not. Therefore it is recommended that schools should incorporate social media platforms as part of their instructional methods. Teachers can create Mathematics-focused groups or pages where they post relevant content, tutorials, assignments, and interactive quizzes to engage students. This approach will allow students to interact with Mathematics content in a platform they are already comfortable with.

Aims and Objectives

The study is to examine the influence of social media platforms on senior secondary school students interest in Mathematics in Dekina LGA Kogi State. Specifically the study intends to:

  1. Identify the social media platforms often used by senior secondary school students in Dekina LGA Kogi State.
  2. Evaluate how social media improves senior secondary school students interest in Mathematics in Dekina LGA Kogi State.
  3. Evaluate the negative influence of social media on senior secondary school students interest in Mathematics in Dekina LGA Kogi State.
  4. Assess whether there is a significant difference in the academic performance in Mathematics of senior secondary school student’ addicted to social media usage and those who are not.

The following research questions are based on the problems raised in the statement of the problem to guide the study.

Hypothesis Of The Study

Ho: There is no significant difference in the academic performance in Mathematics of senior secondary school student’ addicted to social media usage and those who are not.

Ha: There is a significant difference in the academic performance in Mathematics of senior secondary school student’ addicted to social media usage and those who are not.
