Students hold diverse perceptions of mathematics. Leaders in business and athletics often emphasize how an individual’s attitude directly influences their performance, whether in the workplace or on the field. The attitude towards mathematics plays a pivotal role in the teaching and learning processes, significantly impacting students’ achievement in this subject. Factors such as teaching methods, school support structures, family influence, and overall school attitude further influence students’ perceptions of mathematics.
This study specifically investigated the correlation between students’ attitudes and their performance in mathematics within five selected schools in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. The researcher conducted surveys to gauge students’ attitudes towards mathematics education. The findings underscored that both attitude and gender differences significantly affect students’ mathematics performance. Moreover, a positive attitude towards mathematics emerged as a critical factor leading to success in the subject.
Efforts aimed at cultivating a positive attitude towards mathematics at lower education levels serve as a foundation for advanced studies in the subject. Such initiatives also have implications for mathematics achievement at the secondary school level
