Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the effect of social media on the academic performance of Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government. The study was specifically set to determine the extent of social media utilization among Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government, ascertain the social media platforms commonly utilized by Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government, ascertain the relationship between social media and students’ academic performance, and investigate how social media influences the academic performance of Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprises of students and teachers of some selected Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Pearson Correlation statistical tool, SPSS v23. The result of the findings reveals that the extent of social media utilization among Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government is high. Furthermore, the study also revealed that the social media platforms commonly utilized by Biology students in some selected secondary school in Mubi North Local Government includes: WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Telegram. The study recommends that students should better manage their study time in and prevent distractions that can be provided by the social media. There should be a decrease in the number of times spent by students when surfing the net. To mention but a few.
