Overview

ABSTRACT

This work is on Smart Wifi Socket Using Mobile Phone.  Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the emerging technologies at the moment. IoT allows use to control and monitor the use of electric power in rental homes via smart phones. One of the IoT support devices for monitoring power consumption is Smart Socket. Because of its usefulness, the author tries to design a prototype Smart Socket to calculate electric power in a rental house. The method used to create a Smart Socket is an experimental method. For communication needs used HTTP protocol and IoT Platform. The results show that smartphones can be used to control the Smart Socket and retrieve information about the total power consumption of each socket. While Smart Socket can do the calculation of total power consumption and send it to IoT Platform. Smart Socket successfully created and works well.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1                            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the emerging technologies at the moment. With IoT, one can enable or disable an electronic system remotely [1]. In the IoT system, many variations of data are read, collected, and transmitted in an efficient and secure manner [2]. One of the proper modules to be used as the basis of an IoT device is the ESP-12E due to its economical price, low power consumption capability and integrated with TCP / IP [3]. The device is equipped with WiFi capability with satisfactory function [4]. With the WiFi feature, the ESP8266 module can connect to the internet.

One part of IoT is a smartphone. Smartphones are used to be the control and monitoring center of an electronic device. One of the most widely used operating systems on smartphones is the Android operating system. Android is an operating system for linux-based mobile devices that includes middleware and applications [5].

In general, a rental house has only one kWh-meter, to calculate the power consumption. Meanwhile, the use of electricity from each occupant of the rental house is not the same. However, the fees paid from each rental resident are the same. This causes the injustice and inconvenience of other rental residents. With IoT, rented house owners can monitor the power consumption of each room of the residents so that it can be used as a reference to quote the rental price per month per room. This calculation system will reduce the sense of injustice if payment is generalized.

One of the IoT support devices can be implemented for monitoring power consumption is the Smart Socket. Smart Socket designed to disconnect or connect the flow of electric current. Because of its usefulness, the author tries to design a prototype Smart Socket for the calculation of electrical power in a rental house, which aims to provide a solution to the problem of electricity use inequality between residents of rental homes.

1.2                                   PROBLEM STATEMENT

Standby energy consumption, commonly known as the energy drawn down by an electrical appliance when it is not in use, contributes a significant amount of energy waste and safety issues in the built environment. Traditionally, energy meter is used to monitor the total energy consumed in the whole building which permits the user to read energy consumed by reading the figures displayed on the meter. The challenge with this meter was that when excess power is consumed it will not be able to display where the excess consumption is coming from and the reading involves the user visiting the metering point to check in other to check the unit balance and also, it doesn’t have the capacity of removing appliances that are not in use which are in standby mode. Smart wifi socket was built to overcome these challenges. Smart wifi socket remotely switch power on/off, get information of device’s power consumption and eventually control the nearby devices using mobile application.

1.3                     AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of this study is to build a smart WiFi socket using mobile phone. The objectives of the work are:

  1. To provide an economic attractive and easier operating solution to reduce the standby energy waste of electric
  2. To build a smart WiFi socket by implementing IOT.
  • To monitor energy consumed values with high precision to support the energy-saving

1.3                                   RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How do you make a WiFi smart plug?

How do WiFi smart sockets work?

What is a wireless socket?

1.4                            SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study seeks to provide insights into the reduction of standby energy waste coupled to electric appliances.

This study addresses the standby energy waste of household electric appliances and associated economic losses. Input-output analysis on monitored voltage and current was employed to assess the performance and examine the precision of the developed system. As it was targeted at facilitating easier operation, the smart socket was developed to be compatible with other remote controllers of household electric appliances.

The system will serve as a means of measuring voltage values accurately to avoid overvoltage for security protection. The measuring unit could monitor current values with high precision to support the energy-saving control.

1.5                                    SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers building a smart wifi socket using mobile application which was built around a Microcontroller ESP8266 – which composes an in-built wifi, for wireless monitoring of energy consumed which assess the performance and examine the precision of the developed system. As it was targeted at facilitating easier operation, the smart socket was developed to be compatible with other remote controllers of household electric appliances.
