Abstract

Doormat is described as a carpet used only for wiping feet before coming inside? Doormat should do a lot more than that. In this work we have made a project which notifies you when any guest or visitor steps at doormat.

For this purpose we here use piezoelectric sensors that use piezoelectric effect in order to measure acceleration, force, pressure by its conversion into electric signals, then notifies with making the buzzer ON and SMS alert to the user. So whenever any Visitors arrive there is no need of any doorbell doormat can automatically detect visitor and notify on their behalf. With the Piezo sensor built-in, Mat is able to actively monitor any time whether there’s a change in pressure from someone or something standing or sitting on the Mat.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Nowadays, security is one of the crucial issues in the world. Home security system has altered significantly over the last decade and it is expected that the change will be continuing in the coming years.
Burglary and other household thefts have been increasing noticeably. Besides, safety from gas leakage, fire and controlling appliances remotely have become the essential requirements for the modern homes, offices and buildings. Therefore, currently used security systems, which mainly rely on video monitoring, need to be enhanced to meet the acceptable level of security [1].
Due to radical advancement of sensor network technologies, smart home service market has been growing than ever before, that enables our life easier, simpler, and safer. Floor sensors in houses have been developed to locate user presense and to provide location-based, context-awaring scenarios as well as to minimize privacy invasion. However, there is an installation cost and user identication issues where the sensors are installed on whole floor and have low scanning resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel smart home sensor system with foot-mat-based user identification sensor, which equipped wireless communication capability and have less limitation on installation places. Our smart mat based smart home scenarios are suggested.
The proposed system allows the user to obtain both security and safety. The aim is to notify user via SMS and alarm when any guest or visitor steps at doormat.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
The need for having a constant home protection has always been there. But in the recent times, considering a dramatic rise in petty crimes like robbery and theft, the need has been more strongly felt to have a fool proof protection of the belongings and the family members. Home security has come a long way in the last few decades. It was in the hands of a guard who manually provided surveillance during nights in the earlier days, but it was not fool proof as it was only normal for him to have momentary lapse of concentration. This device brought solution to this need. It ensures adequate protection against intruders by notifying the user via SMS and alarm when any guest or visitor steps at doormat.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main aim of this work is to build a device that will notify user via SMS and alarm when any guest or visitor steps at doormat. The objectives are:
i. To inform the occupant of the house at the present of visitor
ii. To prevent accessing unapproved people to the property while the owner of the house is not at home or not.
iii. To improve security
iv. To evaluate the operation of piezoelectric sensor

1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work is focused on building a device that user via SMS and alarm when any guest or visitor steps at doormat using piezoelectric sensor and microcontroller, after that the property owner will be informed by short message service (SMS) through global system for mobile communication (GSM) networks.

1.5 BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
i. Deterrent to Criminals: the system provides an alarm for your home that indicates that your home is protected. The presence of this alarm alone may persuade burglars and other criminals to pass over your home and move on to a dwelling that is not protected by a security system.
ii. This system will help the owner of a house to know the number of persons that visited their house when at home or not at home.
iii. This system is fully automated. So once this system is installed inside home or industry, then it does not require any human interaction to operate.
iv. With the use of this system we can save the life of person inside home / industry.
v. Also the property inside house and various materials inside the house and industry are saved from to theft.
vi. This system is cost effective. Also it is Fast and efficient

1.6 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
The SMS alert will stop whenever there is no network coverage at any point in time. All service SMS charges from service provider apply.

1.7 APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT
1) This project has its main application in security system. This project can be used in home welcome mat as domestic security system. It will be really useful for the security of flat, bungalow or any row house. It can be used in our house for theft detection at night time.

1.8 METHODOLOGY
To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:
i. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
ii. Draw a block diagram.
iii. Test for continuity of components and devices,
iv. Design and calculation for the device was carried out.
v. Studying of various component used in circuit.
vi. Construction of the circuit was carried out.
vii. Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.10 PROJECT ORGANISATION
The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
