Overview

ABSTRACT

Automation is playing an important role in our daily lives most especially in the 21st century. The main attraction of any automated system is reducing human labour, effort, time and errors due to human negligence. With the development of modern technology, smart phones have become a necessity for every person on this planet. Applications are being developed on Android systems that are useful to us in various ways. Another upcoming technology is natural language processing which enables us to command and control things with our voice. Combining all of these, this work is on a microcontroller based voice controlled home automation system using smartphones. Such a system will enable users to have control over every appliance in his/her home with their voice. All that the user needs is an Android smartphone, which is present in almost everybody’s hand nowadays, and a control circuit. The control circuit consists of an Arduino Uno microcontroller, which processes the user commands and controls the switching of devices. The connection between the microcontroller and the smartphone is established via Bluetooth, a widespread wireless technology used for sharing data.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                           INTRODUCTION

1.1                                            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This project is mainly designed for elderly and disabled people. Home Automation is popular as it helps in reducing efforts and errors because of human and it further increases the efficiency. Different applications like lights, fans, TV, AC etc. can be controlled by use this project through Bluetooth wirelessly. Other types of Automation Systems include Internet Controlled, RF Controlled or IR based Remote Controlled. Based on the application requirement we can prefer the type as each has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this project , by sending a Voice Command we can control where different appliances. The main controlling component in the system is Arduino UNO, which is the heart of the circuit. The arduino accepts voice commands and process them. That means one can switch the device either ON or OFF. The proposed system has mainly two parts, they are

  • Voice recognition system, and (b) wireless data transfer system. In this project controlling of home appliances are done by using a voice controlled android application. It is easy for users to make use of remote access to control various

The aim of the report “ Voice controlled home appliances using Arduino Bluetooth” is to furnish a system that can respond to voice commands and control the ON/OFF status of electrical devices either ac or dc. The system should be reasonably cheap, easy to configure and easy to use. The user should be able to control all the appliances from any point in their home, so a wireless controller should be provided. This report demonstrates a system that can be integrated as a single portable unit and allows one to wirelessly control lights, fans, air conditioners, television, etc. This integrated platform for home security, monitoring and automation by using arduino microcontroller. A Bluetooth model is interfaced with the control unit for sensing the signals transmitted by android application. The commands given through voice are conveyed to the control unit with switches on loads ON/OFF as desired. These voice commands sent are converted to binary sequence in microcontroller. The microcontroller unit takes decision and performs the required decision.

1.2                                                     PROBLEM STATEMENT

Most homes make use of many electrical and electronics appliances such as the television set, standing fan, ceiling fan, air conditioner, lighting bulbs, video players, radio, etc. All these appliances require switching to turn on and turn off these appliances traditionally. This manual switching of any home appliance is an inconvenient method for physically disabled or elderly or even for the young and busy individuals when frequent switching operation is required. This smart home automation is most beneficial for handicap or aged people. The system solves the problem of switching on/off electrical appliances because when user just have to give voice command to control the appliance or electrical loads.

1.3                                       AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of this work is to build a voice controlled device which is based upon speech recognition system. The systems user interface device is a smartphone and software which interface with Arduino Uno to execute commands of user. The objectives are:

  1. To wirelessly control ON and OFF of appliances
  2. To reduce the risk of electric shock that occurs when making contact with electrical appliances.
  • To operate devices using android Bluetooth.

1.4                                                   PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This project is mainly designed for elderly and disabled people with the purpose of reducing efforts and errors because of human and it further increases the efficiency.

1.5                                                    SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The system is designed in such a way user can control all appliance at once or can control each separately. The system works by interfacing the on/off switches of electrical appliance or loads by using relay or solid state replay, after connecting relays in system the electrical switch works as two way switch. A micro-controller (Arduino Uno) is implemented in system, the micro controller receives input signal from user device and sent signal to respective relay for turning on/off electrical appliances connected with system such as bulbs, fan, air conditioner unit etc. The system works on 12V DC power which is converted from 220V AC power by using step-down transformer, rectifier for converting AC into DC and capacitive filter making fluctuating DC into pure DC power.

1.6                                                        LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.
  2. Difficulty in parts gathering: I found it too difficult when gathering electronics parts used for the prototype.

1.7                                                      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work will throw more light on the best techniques for controlling home appliances automatically. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all users of home appliances most especially the elderly and disabled, it will help them in reducing their labour, effort, time and errors due to human negligence when controlling appliances.

1.8                                             RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.
