Abstract

This qualitative study assesses the status of threatened and endangered forest tree species and their associated benefits in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research, highlighting the significance of forest trees, the threats they face, and the importance of assessing their status. Chapter 2 reviews the literature on threatened and endangered species, emphasizing the conceptual framework, the status of forest trees in Nigeria, and the benefits and conservation efforts associated with these species. In Chapter 3, the methodology outlines data collection methods, including field surveys, interviews with local communities, and a review of existing literature. Chapter 4 presents the results, including the identification of threatened and endangered species and an assessment of their ecological and socio-economic benefits. Finally, Chapter 5 offers conclusions and recommendations, emphasizing conservation priorities, socio-economic impacts, and policy recommendations. The study underscores the importance of conserving threatened and endangered tree species for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the region.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Potiskum Local Government Area, situated in Yobe State, Nigeria, holds a significant ecological and socio-economic importance within the region. With a land area covering approximately Yobe State Government, 2020, Potiskum LGA represents a diverse landscape comprising various ecosystems, including forests, savannahs, and wetlands. The area is characterized by a semi-arid climate, experiencing distinct wet and dry seasons, which profoundly influence its vegetation patterns and biodiversity (Umar et al., 2020).
Forest trees play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, providing numerous ecosystem services, and supporting local livelihoods. In Potiskum LGA, forest trees contribute to soil stabilization, water regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation (Abdullahi et al., 2019). Additionally, they serve as a source of timber, non-timber forest products, and traditional medicines for the local communities, thereby contributing to their socio-economic well-being (Ibrahim et al., 2021).
Despite their significance, forest tree species in Potiskum LGA face various threats, primarily driven by human activities and environmental factors. Deforestation and land-use change, driven by agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development, have led to the degradation and fragmentation of forest habitats (Bako et al., 2022). Climate change, characterized by rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns, further exacerbates the vulnerability of forest tree species to drought, diseases, and pests (Ali et al., 2021). Additionally, unsustainable harvesting practices, fueled by increasing demand for forest products, pose a significant threat to the survival of many tree species (Musa et al., 2020).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The decline of forest tree species in Potiskum Local Government Area poses a significant environmental challenge. This decline is primarily attributed to human-induced factors such as deforestation, land-use change, and unsustainable harvesting practices (Bako et al., 2022). Deforestation, driven by agricultural expansion and urbanization, results in the loss of forest cover and habitat fragmentation, directly impacting the survival of tree species (Ali et al., 2021). Additionally, indiscriminate logging for timber and fuelwood further accelerates the decline of forest tree populations (Musa et al., 2020). Without intervention, this trend could lead to the extinction of critical tree species within the region.

The impacts of declining tree species extend beyond ecological concerns and affect the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem. Forest trees play a crucial role in regulating the local climate, maintaining soil fertility, and supporting biodiversity (Abdullahi et al., 2019). The loss of tree species disrupts these ecological functions, leading to soil erosion, reduced water retention, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and landslides (Ibrahim et al., 2021).
