This research study aims to evaluate waste minimization strategies in building construction sites. The primary objectives are to: identify the types of construction waste commonly generated on-site, understand the significance of waste control in the construction industry, determine the causes of waste on construction sites, and propose methods to reduce waste. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to examine these objectives in detail.
A survey research design was employed for this study, collecting data through questionnaires administered to companies and professionals within the construction sector. The collected data was meticulously analyzed and presented in tabular form. The study focused on a target population of 62 individuals, including 38 architects and 23 site engineers working on construction sites. Three hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance.
The findings revealed that no professional in the building construction industry desires excessive waste on-site. It was also discovered that waste is a common issue encountered on construction sites. However, waste minimization is not considered highly important by professionals in the field.
Based on the causes of construction waste identified in the study, several recommendations are made to minimize waste accumulation on construction sites. Contractors are advised to emphasize quality in construction activities to reduce rework, which is a significant cause of material wastage. Additionally, contractors should adopt safer and more efficient methods of transporting materials to sites to mitigate wastage caused by transportation challenges. Clients are encouraged to provide necessary information promptly to minimize last-minute changes, enabling contractors to manage their materials more effectively
