Abstract

Recent advancements, particularly in the field of information technology, have brought significant scientific benefits to humanity. However, the introduction of new scientific and technological domains invariably raises ethical issues and necessitates certain restrictions. This study aimed to examine the ethical concerns associated with using computers as tools for technological growth in Nigeria. It was based on a literature review and involved participants including students and computer system experts who serve as computer science instructors in Nigeria. The study highlighted the increasing prevalence of hacking and other unauthorized system access methods, emphasizing that computer ethics has long been a focus of scholarly attention. Interviews were conducted individually with each participant at times and locations of their choosing. The study concluded that ethical considerations related to personal privacy, accuracy, system integrity, and availability are crucial. It also noted that the global expansion of the internet and computer technology has led to new forms of international crime, particularly internet-related offenses. The research recommended that the Nigerian government establish and enforce a minimum set of ethical guidelines to facilitate effective communication and reliable commerce through electronic mediums, ensuring data accuracy and protecting it from unauthorized access or accidental disclosure.
