Overview

ABSTRACT

The design and construction of microcontroller based electric oven and cooker with time and temperature control is presented in this project. The project is built around an arduino micro controller which is programmed to carry out some user defined function. The project is design to meet the safety requirement that is lacking in many similar systems in the market and also make it operation as easy to operate as possible. The microcontroller unit was interfaced with some other components to achieve the set objectives. A temperature sensor senses the temperature of the oven units which is in analogue form and fed the output voltage to the input of the analogue to digital converter (ADC) which convert the analogue signal to a digital equivalent signal. The arduinomicrocontroller performs the mathematics and display the result appropriately on the display unit.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The idea behind the design and construction of this system is to make available or alternative means providing safety and accuracy demand for electric oven using for household or industrial purpose. This goes a long way in helping to curb the problem frequently encountered as a result of fire outbreak, burning of food, and inaccuracy found in measuring and maintaining temperature. That notwithstanding it makes it possible to have other means of heating food without constant temperature monitoring until when the required temperature will be achieved thereby creating time for the operator to be engaged on other works while the system is in operation [1].

Moreover, rate of fire accident cause by heating appliances in this country is high. So there is every need that other means of safety should be made available for constant running of our electric equipments and gadgets and also to provide comfort to man. Hence, with the help of a Thermistor Controlled electric oven, which has come to solve the problem of fire accident and inaccuracy found in temperature measurement in Nigeria, a steady running and operation of our electric equipments and gadgets is guaranteed.

Arduino based temperature Control Oven is used in most of the manufacturing industries. The industries like textile mill, pharmaceutical industry, oil refinery etc. all requires temperature controller. The temperature controllers are used to maintain constant temperature of process or plant or any material. In such temperature controller system there is one reference temperature called set point or set temperature that is the desired temperature that must be maintained. This reference temperature is set by external means. Also it can be always adjustable according to requirements. Once this temperature is set the system tries to maintain it by sensing the current temperature and controlling it using heater, cooler or compressor.

1.2      PROBLEM STATEMENT

The problem happens when temperature control devices such as oven is still functioning although in the event of where a certain temperature needs to be maintained. The function is uncontrolled and must be manually turned on and off. Sometimes it can lead to high usage of electricity which in turn raises the electricity bill when the user forgot to switch it off and at the same time can lead to spoilage of food in the oven. This device ensures that a certain temperature is maintained in an oven and also displays the temperature at which the oven operates, which the major problems discovered in a conventional oven

1.3                                       AIM/OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this study is to build an arduino microcontroller based temperature controlled oven with digital display.

The objectives of this work are:

  1. To build the system prototype
  2. To design a device that can be used to measure the temperature display them on a LCD.
  • To maintain a certain temperature of an oven.

1.4                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

Oven Temperature controller is needed in any situation requiring a given temperature be kept stable. This can be in a situation where an object is required to be heated, cooled or both and to remain at the target temperature (setpoint), regardless of the changing environment around it.

  • This oven offer more even and uniform baking and browning. Because of the fan, the heating is more equally spread throughout the chamber, and this means more consistent baking of food.  The edge of that cake is just as well cooked as the middle.
  • You can often achieve the same degree of cooking in a food with lower oven temperature settings, due to added heat transfers to the food via the fan driven convection air currents.

1.5                                                   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this system covers building a microcontroller based temperature control oven which consists of Arduino board, LCD display, Relay, and thermistor. The working mainly depends on the relay and thermistor as the temperature is increasing the relay will be turned on  but when the temperature gets to the preset level it will switch off and if the temperature decreased below the preset value (-30C) then Relay will be turned ON again maintaining the required temperature.

1.6                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

  • Opening the door during baking can drastically increase food cook times, by interfering with the convection currents inside. So keep the door closed until it’s time to remove the food.  If you like inspecting your cakes while they’re baking, buy a convection unit with a window in its door.

1.5                                      APPLICATIONS AND ADVANTAGES

  1. This project can be used in Mechanical companies to measure various parameters of operating machines like temperature.
  2. Can be used in green houses to control the temperature
  3. Temperature monitoring and controlling action can be used in home or various halls like conference room, seminar hall to control the temperature of room.
  4. Ovens are used to sterilize items that might be damaged by moist heat or that are impenetrable to moist heat.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.1                                                           CONCLUSION

The course of undergoing this project has disclosed numerous important things about a temperature control oven. Ranging from its economic importance and recommendation based on the use of this temperature control oven system. Hence with the successful design and construction of this project, a more efficient way of ensuring continuous availability of temperature record is provided even in the absence of the operator. This provides the possibility that is can still put on his/her appliance in the absence of the user.

5.2                                                    RECOMMENDATION

This system involves heating the oven to the required temperature, maintaining that temperature for the proper time interval for that temperature. This project is designed to be used in our homes and industries where the need for accurate temperature and safety is needed. And should be used and maintain by a qualified personnel.
