Abstract

In this study, our focus was on the effect of teachers salary, commitments and effectiveness on academic performance among senior secondary school students in chemistry using selected secondary schools in Lagos state as case study. The study is was specifically focused on investigating the relationship between teachers’ salaries and teachers’ effectiveness/productivity in private and public secondary schools in Lagos State’ examining the effect of monetary incentives on teachers’ performance and examine the impact of teachers’ satisfaction on students learning outcomes in chemistry.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 100 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are staff of selected secondary schools in Lagos state.

Aims and Objectives

The main objective of the study is to examine the the effect of teachers salary, commitments and effectiveness on academic performance among senior secondary school students in chemistry.Specifically, the aim is

  1. To investigate the relationship between teachers’ salaries and teachers’ productivity in private and public secondary schools in Lagos State.
  2. To examine the effect of monetary incentives on teachers’ performance.
  3. Examine the impact of teachers’ satisfaction on students learning outcomes in chemistry.
Research Questions

This research work will be guided by the following research questions:

  1. What is the relationship between secondary school teachers’ salaries and teachers’ productivity in private and public secondary schools in Lagos State?
  2. Is monetary incentive a significant predictor of teachers’ performance?
  3. Does teachers’ satisfaction have any effect on students learning outcomes in chemistry?

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the compensation packages and teachers’ effectiveness in private and public secondary schools using selected secondary schools in Lagos state as case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.2 Summary of the Study

5.3 Conclusions 

From the findings of this study, it can be concluded that effective salary package enhances tearcher’s Performance and commitment. When employees perceive that the policies in place encompasses their welfare, performance will be enhanced through Performance to work and intention to leave the organization will be drastically reduced. The subject of compensation poses a critical challenge for the Nigerian workforce. This poses a threat to the achievement of organization; objective as human capital is already the sure way of achieving them. A fairly designed compensation policy will have a positive impact on performance outcomes and enhance the Perfomance levels of employees.

5.4 Recommendations

The following recommendations are provided for high performance based on the finding of this study:  This study found that compensation policy has a significant relationship with employees Perfomance which therefore improves organizational performance. It is therefore recommended that:

  1. Appropriate and equitable compensation policy should be designed to facilitate increased employees Perfomance.
  2. The policy should be assessable to all/potential employees
  3. The research recommends that a review of all compensation packages should be instituted and undertaken periodically to ensure all packages are given equal attention and developed to be abreast with current economic situation.
  4. It is recommended that management should develop a manual that clearly spells out the categorization of the compensation packages and their administrative procedure and copies of this manual should be made available to the entire employee population to allay their fears in that regard.
